Introduction to Robotics & Programming for K12

Research Conclusion
A careful analysis of the course content as revealed by the college-level textbooks used in the introduction to robotics and programming course has lead to the conclusion that for all practical purposes, the majority of all knowledge content in the selected textbooks could be taught to high school students. Thus, the research on this subject has been completed. Nevertheless, for thoroughness of research, textbooks used in the Electrical Engineering 244 (Digital Engineering) and Electrical Engineering 345 (Microcomputer Engineering) will be studied if necessary for the extraction of K12 age-possible engineering topics.

About the Course ...This The Fall 2014 Class Schedule of East Los Angeles College (page 44) gives the following description for this course: "An introductory course in robotics; hand-on
experience on building a PARALLAX robot. Understanding electric motors, servos,
sensors, switches and actuators. Basic Stamp computer programming and integration
into a working robotic unit;
including mechanical assembly, connecting electronic components, wiring, soldering, and testing." No pre-requisite is listed. This course counts as 3.0 units in the semester system, and is transferable to all campuses.in the California State University System.

Robotics with the Boe-Bot Student Guide, Version 3.0, written by Andy Lindsay, 302 pages long, is a Parallax robotic programming manual used in the Manufacturing & Industrial Technology 220 (Introduction to Robotics) course, Fall Semester, 2014, at East Los Angeles College. As stated in the PDF file manual, the series of hands-on activities and projects will introduce
students to basic robotic concepts using the Parallax Boe-Bot robot, called
the "Boe-Bot." This user manual offers very detailed step-by-step instructions on robotic programming using the Parallax kit, with an easy learning curve for embedded programming and introductory robotics, to be understood by students at middle schools and above. After a careful and thorough examination of all pages in the PDF file, it has been concluded that:
(1) As expected, the mathematics concepts and skills needed to complete the projects and activities are minimal; and they include [four operations], [fraction], [percentage], [variable], [power], [root], [sign] (+, -), [inequality], [binary number system] (0, 1), [systems of units] (metric, customary), [distance] (length, width, height], [direction] (CW or clockwise, CCW or counterclockwise), [triangle], [trigonometric functions] (sine waves), [table], [graph], [chart], [block diagram]. The content of the manual is basically descriptive and informational, with a few analytic and predictive computational formulas based on pre-calculus level mathematics skills.
(2) For all practical purposes, no prior mastery of knowledge and skills in physics and chemistry is needed for the completion of the projects and activities, although an overview of relevant concepts by the instructor is certainly helpful; and they include [speed], [velocity], [rate], [time], (hour, minute, second), [frequency], [vibration], [piezoelectric], [motion] (linear, rotational), [motion] (forward, backward, left, right, pivoting, rotational), and [wavelength].
(3) The manual explains most of the concepts and computational formulas related to electricity and electronics components and devices in sufficient details such that a prior course in electricity and electronics is not necessary; the relevant concepts and skills as well as knowledge about components include [Ohm's Law] (voltage, current, resistance), [current flow] (I/O, or input/output), [electronic schematics], [schematic symbols], [part drawing], [current] (AC, DC), [calibration], [navigation], [signal pulse], [frequency], [plug], [power switch], [capacitor], [resistor], [sensors], [microcontroller], [LED, or light emission diode], [anode], [cathode], [battery], [terminal], [servo], [transistor], [phototransistor], [oscilloscope], [piezospeaker], [whisker], [antennae], and [light] (fluorescent, incandescent, halogen, infrared).
